A succulent plant that’s adapted to arid conditions, this euphorbia thrives in both full sun and bright, indirect light. The common name “milkstripe” is due to an irregular yellowish-white band in the center of the plant’s three-or-four-sided, somewhat prickly stems. When repotting, use only soil designed for cactus and succulents, and select containers with ample drainage holes.
- Botanical Name: Euphorbia lactea
- Common Names: Milkstripe, Mottled Spurge, Mottled Candlestick, Dragon Bones Tree
Here are some key points about caring for Milkstripe Euphorbia:
- Light: Provide bright, indirect light for the Milkstripe Euphorbia. It can tolerate some direct sunlight, especially in the morning or late afternoon, but avoid intense midday sun, which can scorch the plant.
- Temperature: This plant prefers warm temperatures and does well in typical indoor temperatures ranging from 65°F to 85°F (18°C to 29°C). Protect it from cold drafts and temperatures below 50°F (10°C).
- Watering: Water the Milkstripe Euphorbia thoroughly when the top inch of soil feels dry during the growing season (spring and summer). Allow excess water to drain away and avoid leaving the plant sitting in water, as this can lead to root rot. Reduce watering in the winter months when the plant is dormant.
- Soil: Use a well-draining cactus or succulent potting mix for planting Milkstripe Euphorbia. You can also add perlite or sand to improve drainage.
- Fertilizing: Feed the Milkstripe Euphorbia with a balanced liquid fertilizer diluted to half strength during the growing season. Fertilize once a month or according to the fertilizer’s instructions.
- Potting: Repot the Milkstripe Euphorbia every 2-3 years or when it outgrows its current pot. Choose a slightly larger container with drainage holes to accommodate the plant’s roots.
- Pruning: Prune the Milkstripe Euphorbia sparingly to remove dead or damaged stems. Wear gloves when handling the plant, as its milky sap can be irritating to the skin and eyes.
- Propagation: Milkstripe Euphorbia can be propagated from stem cuttings. Allow the cuttings to callus for a few days before planting them in well-draining soil. Keep the soil lightly moist until new growth appears.
- Pests and Diseases: Watch out for common succulent pests such as mealybugs, spider mites, and scale insects. Treat infestations promptly with insecticidal soap or neem oil. Avoid overwatering to prevent root rot and fungal diseases.
With proper care, the Milkstripe Euphorbia can thrive and add architectural interest to your indoor or outdoor succulent collection.
