The jade satin pothos is beloved for its large, thick, heart-shaped leaves and deep green coloring. It can be difficult to find and acquire compared to some of its pothos relatives, and more expensive too. That being said, it is not considered particularly rare and most houseplant shops or nurseries should carry it.
- Botanical Name: Scindapsus Pictus ‘jade’
- Common Names: jade satin pothos
Here are some care tips for your Pothos Jade Satin:
- Light: Pothos Jade Satin thrives in bright, indirect light but can tolerate low light conditions. Avoid direct sunlight, as it may scorch the leaves. Place your plant near a window where it can receive filtered sunlight or artificial fluorescent light.
- Watering: Allow the top inch or two of soil to dry out between waterings, then water your Pothos Jade Satin thoroughly until water drains from the bottom of the pot. Empty any excess water from the saucer to prevent waterlogging. Reduce watering in winter when growth slows down.
- Soil: Plant your Pothos Jade Satin in well-draining potting soil. A mix formulated for indoor plants or a combination of peat moss, perlite, and/or coarse sand works well.
- Temperature: Maintain average room temperatures between 65-85°F (18-29°C). Pothos Jade Satin is sensitive to cold drafts and temperatures below 50°F (10°C), so protect it from chilly air.
- Humidity: Pothos Jade Satin can adapt to normal household humidity levels, but it appreciates higher humidity. Increase humidity by misting the foliage regularly or placing a humidifier nearby, especially during dry winter months.
- Fertilization: Feed your Pothos Jade Satin with a balanced liquid fertilizer diluted to half strength every 4-6 weeks during the growing season (spring and summer). Avoid fertilizing during winter or when the plant is not actively growing.
- Pruning: Regularly trim leggy or overgrown stems to encourage bushier growth and maintain the plant’s shape. You can also propagate cuttings from pruned stems to create new plants.
- Propagation: Pothos Jade Satin can be easily propagated from stem cuttings. Simply cut a stem below a node (where leaves emerge) and place it in water or moist potting soil until roots develop.
- Pests: Keep an eye out for common houseplant pests such as aphids, spider mites, and mealybugs. If pests appear, gently wipe the leaves with a damp cloth or treat the plant with insecticidal soap.
- Potting and Repotting: Repot your Pothos Jade Satin when it becomes root-bound, usually every 1-2 years. Choose a slightly larger pot with drainage holes and fresh potting soil.
With proper care, your Pothos Jade Satin will thrive and continue to add beauty to your indoor space with its glossy, jade-colored leaves and trailing growth habit.
