Philodendron Summer Glory is a beautiful cultivar known for its striking foliage and tropical appearance. A new and distinct Philodendron plant named ‘Summer Glory’ is particularly distinguished by unique reddish bronze colored foliage on young leaves, foliage that turns dark, shiny green as the foliage matures, durability, and relative freedom from pests.
- Botanical Name: gloriosum x mccolleys red hybrid
- Common Names: Philodendron Summer Glory, Heartleaf,
Here’s some information about this plant:
- Appearance: Philodendron Summer Glory features large, heart-shaped leaves with prominent lobes and deeply serrated edges. The foliage is typically a vibrant green color with contrasting veins that can range from pink to red, especially on new growth. The leaves have a glossy texture and a slightly waxy sheen, adding to their attractiveness.
- Growth Habit: This Philodendron cultivar tends to grow as a climbing or trailing plant, producing long stems that can cascade gracefully from hanging baskets or climb up supports. It can also be trained to grow as a bushy specimen by pinching back the growing tips to encourage branching.
- Light: Provide Philodendron Summer Glory with bright, indirect light for best growth and leaf coloration. While it can tolerate lower light conditions, it may not exhibit as vibrant colors or grow as vigorously.
- Watering: Allow the top inch or two of soil to dry out before watering thoroughly. Ensure that excess water drains away from the pot to prevent waterlogging, which can lead to root rot. Adjust the watering frequency based on factors such as temperature, humidity, and light levels.
- Humidity: Philodendron Summer Glory appreciates moderate to high humidity levels, typical of its native tropical habitat. If the air in your home is dry, consider increasing humidity by misting the leaves regularly, placing a humidity tray nearby, or using a room humidifier.
- Temperature: Maintain temperatures between 65-85°F (18-29°C) for Philodendron Summer Glory. Avoid exposing the plant to temperature extremes or drafts, as it prefers stable conditions.
- Soil: Plant Philodendron Summer Glory in a well-draining potting mix rich in organic matter. A mixture of peat moss, perlite, and orchid bark or coco coir works well. Ensure that the pot has adequate drainage holes to prevent water from accumulating around the roots.
- Fertilization: Feed the plant with a balanced liquid fertilizer diluted to half strength every 4-6 weeks during the growing season (spring and summer). Reduce or suspend fertilization in fall and winter when growth slows down.
- Pruning: Remove any yellowed, damaged, or leggy growth as needed to maintain the plant’s appearance and promote new growth. You can also prune the plant to control its size and shape or to propagate new plants from stem cuttings.
- Toxicity: Like other Philodendron species, Philodendron Summer Glory contains calcium oxalate crystals, which can cause irritation or discomfort if ingested. Keep the plant out of reach of children and pets, and wash your hands after handling it.
Philodendron Summer Glory is a stunning and relatively low-maintenance plant that can add a tropical vibe to your indoor space. With proper care and attention to its needs, it can thrive and become a focal point in your home or office.
