This striking houseplant hails from Madagascar and because it has leaves growing around the crown this combination gives rise to the common name of Madagascar Palm. Pachypodium means “thick foot” and refers to the thick swollen stem that stores water and gives the plant structure and strength.
The swollen stem grows upwards with the leaves surrounding the crown gradually falling and then growing new ones as it ages. All parts of Pachypodium contain a latex sap which is poisonous. However, even if you do have pets this may not be a total deal breaker because the plant protects itself by way of tough hooked spines that will deter even the most curious cat.

  • Botanical Name: Pachypodium ‘lamerei’
  • Common Names: Madagascar Palm

Here are some key features and care tips for the Madagascar Palm:

  1. Appearance: The Madagascar Palm is known for its tall, columnar trunk that can reach heights of up to 20 feet (6 meters) in its native habitat, although it typically remains smaller when grown as a houseplant. The trunk is covered in sharp spines, and it tapers towards the top. At the top of the trunk, the plant produces a cluster of long, narrow, green leaves. In spring and summer, mature plants may also produce fragrant, white flowers with a yellow center.
  2. Light: Madagascar Palms prefer bright, indirect light. Place them near a sunny window where they can receive several hours of sunlight each day. They can tolerate direct sunlight, but intense sunlight may cause leaf burn.
  3. Watering: These plants are drought-tolerant and prefer to dry out between waterings. Allow the soil to dry out completely before watering thoroughly. In winter, reduce watering to prevent root rot.
  4. Soil: Use a well-draining potting mix formulated for succulents or cacti. A mix of potting soil, sand, and perlite works well. Avoid heavy or water-retentive soils that can cause root rot.
  5. Temperature: Madagascar Palms prefer warm temperatures and are sensitive to frost. They thrive in temperatures between 65°F to 85°F (18°C to 29°C) and can tolerate slightly cooler temperatures if kept dry.
  6. Humidity: These plants are adapted to arid conditions and can tolerate low humidity. They do not require misting or additional humidity.
  7. Propagation: Madagascar Palms can be propagated from seeds or stem cuttings. Seeds may take several months to germinate, while stem cuttings can be rooted in well-draining soil.
  8. Pruning: Remove any dead or yellowing leaves as needed to maintain the plant’s appearance. Use caution when handling the plant due to its sharp spines.
  9. Pests and Diseases: Madagascar Palms are relatively pest-resistant but may occasionally attract mealybugs or spider mites. Inspect the plant regularly for signs of pests, and treat infestations promptly with insecticidal soap or neem oil.
  10. Caution: The sap of Madagascar Palms is toxic and can cause skin irritation or stomach upset if ingested. Handle the plant with care and keep it out of reach of children and pets.

Overall, Madagascar Palms are impressive and low-maintenance plants that can add a touch of exotic beauty to indoor and outdoor spaces with their unique appearance. With proper care, they can thrive for many years, making them a popular choice for succulent enthusiasts.
