The foliage of this Epiphyllum wants to twist and curl into great locks of flat, rich green foliage. Rather small for an Epiphyllum, the 3″ white flowers open at night and may be followed by small red, delicious, edible fruit.
- Botanical Name: Epiphyllum guatemalense
- Common Names: Orchid Cactus ‘Curly Sue’
Here are some care tips for keeping your Orchid Cactus ‘Curly Sue’ healthy and thriving:
- Light: Provide bright, indirect light for your Orchid Cactus. Avoid direct sunlight, especially during the hottest parts of the day, as it can scorch the leaves. A location near an east- or west-facing window where it receives filtered sunlight is ideal.
- Temperature: Maintain temperatures between 65°F to 80°F (18°C to 27°C) during the growing season. In winter, cooler temperatures around 50°F to 60°F (10°C to 15°C) can help induce flowering. Protect the plant from drafts and sudden temperature fluctuations.
- Watering: During the growing season (spring and summer), water your Orchid Cactus thoroughly when the top inch (2.5 cm) of soil feels dry to the touch. Allow excess water to drain away, and avoid letting the plant sit in water, as it can lead to root rot. Reduce watering in fall and winter, allowing the soil to dry out slightly between waterings.
- Humidity: Orchid Cacti appreciate moderate humidity levels. If the air in your home is dry, increase humidity by misting the plant regularly or placing a humidifier nearby. You can also set the pot on a tray filled with pebbles and water to create a humid microclimate around the plant.
- Soil: Use a well-draining potting mix formulated for cacti and succulents. A mix containing perlite, coarse sand, or orchid bark works well. Repot the plant every 2 to 3 years in spring to refresh the soil and provide additional space for root growth.
- Fertilizing: Feed your Orchid Cactus with a balanced liquid fertilizer diluted to half strength every 4 to 6 weeks during the growing season. Reduce or stop fertilizing in fall and winter when the plant is dormant.
- Pruning: Prune your Orchid Cactus as needed to maintain its shape and size. Remove any dead, damaged, or overgrown stems to encourage new growth. You can also propagate the plant from stem cuttings taken during the growing season.
- Flowering: Orchid Cacti typically produce large, showy flowers in spring or summer. To encourage blooming, provide cooler temperatures and shorter daylight hours in fall and winter. Avoid disturbing the plant or moving it once flower buds have formed, as this can cause bud drop.
- Pests and Diseases: Orchid Cacti are relatively resistant to pests and diseases, but they may occasionally attract spider mites, mealybugs, or scale insects. Inspect the plant regularly for signs of pests, and treat infestations promptly with insecticidal soap or neem oil.
- Toxicity: Orchid Cacti are non-toxic to humans and pets, making them safe to grow indoors.
With proper care and attention to its growing requirements, your Orchid Cactus ‘Curly Sue’ can reward you with its beautiful foliage and spectacular flowers. Enjoy watching it thrive in your home!
