Chrysanthemums (mums) are one of the most popular fall garden flowers. Most mum plants are easy to grow with their basic needs being full sun, rich soil, good drainage, and good air circulation. There are hundreds of varieties available in a range of shapes and sizes that can provide blooms from late summer through fall. Chrysanthemums symbolize different things in different countries: life and rebirth in Asia, sympathy in Europe, and respect and honor in America.
- Botanical Name:Chrysanthemums
- Common Name(s): Mums, Chrysanths
Here’s some information on caring for these beautiful plants:
- Light: Mums thrive in full sunlight. Place them in a location where they can receive at least 6 hours of direct sunlight each day. If grown indoors, choose a bright window where they can get plenty of sunlight.
- Temperature: Mums prefer cooler temperatures. They do best when daytime temperatures range between 60-70°F (15-21°C) and nighttime temperatures between 50-60°F (10-15°C).
- Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Water deeply when the top inch of soil feels dry to the touch, and make sure excess water can drain freely from the pot to prevent root rot. Avoid overhead watering, as wet foliage can increase the risk of fungal diseases.
- Soil: Plant mums in well-draining soil enriched with organic matter. A slightly acidic to neutral soil pH is ideal for optimal growth.
- Fertilization: Feed mums with a balanced fertilizer formulated for flowering plants once a month during the growing season (spring and summer). Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for application rates.
- Pruning: Pinch back the growing tips of young mum plants in spring and early summer to encourage bushier growth and more flower buds. Deadhead spent blooms regularly to prolong flowering and promote new bud development.
- Winter Care: In regions with cold winters, mums can be overwintered outdoors if provided with adequate protection. Mulch around the base of the plants in late fall to insulate the roots and protect them from freezing temperatures. Alternatively, you can bring potted mums indoors to a cool, bright location for the winter.
- Pests and Diseases: Keep an eye out for common pests such as aphids, spider mites, and thrips, especially when growing mums indoors. Treat any infestations promptly with insecticidal soap or neem oil. Watch for signs of fungal diseases such as powdery mildew or gray mold, and ensure good air circulation around the plants to prevent humidity buildup.
- Varieties: There are many different cultivars of chrysanthemums available, with blooms in a wide range of colors, shapes, and sizes. Choose varieties that suit your preferences and growing conditions.
By providing proper care, you can enjoy the colorful blooms of chrysanthemums throughout the growing season, whether they’re planted in garden beds or grown as potted plants indoors.
